Standerton Cricket Club’s flag flies high

Standerton Cricket Club returned to a dry pitch this weekend with a victory for the first and the second teams.

The Standerton 1 beat Bethal Bears by six wickets in the 50-overs league match played at home on February 26.

Bethal Bears went in to bat first and scored 259 runs for 10 wickets in 46 overs.

Top scorer Drikus Pentz made 65 runs off 77 balls before Dayne Young caught him out from a ball bowled by Werner Mouton.

Bethal’s other top scorers were Pieter Viljoen with 48 runs off 59 balls and Hendriko Janse van Rensburg with 29 runs off 20 balls.

Standerton’s players took a while to warm up on the field, but this changed after they returned from a drink break at over 17.

The team’s combination of on-target bowling and fast fieldwork sent three of the Bears’ batsmen off with only one run each and another with a mere two runs.

Captain Jan-Dirk van Dyk led by example by taking two wickets and two catches. Carus van Rensburg also took two wickets, and PJ Venter stunned with three wickets.

Standerton returned to the pitch to bat in the second innings and trumped Bethal’s score in the 37th over, with a score of 261 runs for four wickets in 37.4 overs.

Solly Janse van Rensburg opened as a batsman and made 60 runs off 76 balls. He was run out by Bethal’s Thinus Plowman.

His opening partner, PJ Venter, hit 51 runs off 54 balls. This partnership secured 133 runs for Standerton.

Henre Naude smashed 59 runs off 45 balls, not out. Pieter van Niekerk also whacked 43 runs off only 21 balls, not out. He hit three sixes and four fours.

Standerton 2 sent Sasol 3 Kinross home early when they beat them by seven wickets on Saturday, February 25.
Sasol 3 Kinross was unable to put up much of a score, with only 77 runs for 10 wickets in 14.3 overs.

Their top batsman, Kenneth Mahlangu, made 18 runs off 20 balls. Standerton’s bowlers had a field day with their opponents.

Mouton felled four wickets, Van Niekerk took three wickets, and Young took two wickets. Standerton chased down Kinross’ score with ease, scoring 80 runs for three wickets.

Standerton’s top batsmen were Van Niekerk, who scored 28 runs off 29 balls, and Mouton, who scored 23 runs off 18.
