Secunda Regional Court sentences teacher to 10 years for deeds with school boys

The teacher began preying on boys in 2017 and continued up until his arrest in 2021.

SECUNDA – A former teacher was handed an effective 10-year prison sentence by Magistrate Graham Cupido in the Secunda Regional Court on November 11.

The teacher pleaded guilty to eight charges of compelled sexual assault, sexual grooming of children and statutory sexual assault on learners under the age of 18 years on October 19.

Phumuzile Nkosi was the prosecutor in this case. The teacher’s name will now appear on the National Sexual Offenders register.

He is not allowed to own a firearm, nor work with children in the future.

The teacher was arrested on May 22, 2021, after the principal of the school notified authorities of the allegations that two learners had made.

The principal, deputy principal and governing body worked closely with the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit (FCS).

Five victims came forward and made statements. The teacher began preying on the boys in 2017 and continued up until his arrest in 2021.

*Editor’s note: The law is clear that the identity of the victims should be protected at all costs, and thus the media is not allowed to publish any information that can lead to the identification of the victims.

It is for this reason that the names of the school and teacher are being withheld.
