Basizeni School in eMbalenhle salute their graduates

These learners with special educational needs are taught woodwork, nails and beauty, welding and much more.

The Basizeni School for learners with special educational needs in eMbalenhle held a graduation ceremony at Sasol Club on Thursday, November 17.

These learners were graduating in the learning fields of woodwork, nail and beauty, sewing, weaving, welding, car washing, agriculture, computer skills and other vocational courses.

Nomthetho Memela, the principal, said some of these learners came from mainstream schools, but because of their intellectual disabilities, they ended up in special schools.

“Our school ends in Grade 6, so after graduating, we absorb some and help others to apply for work in different companies while we also encourage them to further their studies.

“These learners are just like us. The only difference is their intellectual disability.

“We ask that the community should accept them with their disability and stop the stigma,” said Memela.

This year, 21 learners graduated compared to last year’s 10.
