Netball weekend in Cullinan unites enthusiasts

Cullinan hosts Tshwane Netball.

“We are here because you embraced an opportunity.

“When you are fully present in your life you will never miss an opportunity because you are too busy. Because when you are present, you see the truth: Life is short, fleeting and impermanent.

“There will never be another moment just like this one – ever.”

Riana Bezuidenhout, chairperson of Tshwane Netball, said this at the opening of the Tshwane Thuto Legacy Programme netball event in Cullinan on Saturday, November 12.

Cullinan was abuzz from November 11 to 13, as Tshwane Netball came to town to bring communities who love netball together.

The inaugural Tshwane Thuto Legacy Programme was held at the Cullinan Library Park, and despite extreme weather, netball enthusiasts turned up in support of the players.

An opening “Know your rules” course was held on Friday, November 11.

Saturday began with an opening ceremony by the MMC for Community and Social Development, Councillor Peggy de Bruin, as well as Cecilia Molokwane, the president of Netball South Africa and Bezuidenhout.

After the South African national anthem was sung, teams battled it out on the court in a Netball World Cup simulation and Region 3, who represented Team Jamaica, lifted the first-ever Tshwane Thuto Legacy Programme Floating trophy sponsored by Petra Diamond Mines.

The four top spots claimed were Team Jamaica, Team Australia, Team New Zealand and lastly Team Uganda.

The Tshwane Netball Social Cohesion and Community Games also took place on Saturday with three categories, namely informal settlements, women over 35 and mixed teams, as well as a new format where the court was split into two and each half had two teams playing simultaneously.

The players had great fun with the latter. This event also reminded people that sport brings communities together.

Tshwane Netball thanked all stakeholders and partners, including Petra Diamond Mine, the City of Tshwane, Netball South Africa, Gauteng Netball, TUKS Sport, SPAR, the Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation and the municipal offices in Cullinan for seeing the future as they do.
