Dra Mekaar seniors from Secunda release balloons at monthly meeting

This is a great way for seniors to get together, to make new friends and have a change of scenery than the enclosed home.

The Dra Mekaar Senior Group met at their second monthly get-together at the N.G. Church on Wednesday, October 12.

The morning was opened with prayer and scripture reading by Pieter Bezuidenhout, with birthday wishes going out to Pieter Bezuidenhout, Ella Botha, Neels Nauta and Louwtjie Schoeman.

Seniors bid farewell to Neels and Mien Nauta, who moved to Midstream after being residents of Secunda for more than 40 years.

Papers folded as a card were placed at each seating. Seniors could write a verse, message, prayer or what was on their hearts.

The card was tied onto a stringed balloon. Everyone gathered at the church entrance with their balloons, which were released after a final prayer.

All sat down to a mouth-watering meal made by coordinator Jakkie Jacobs’ volunteers, which consisted of chicken, salads and potato bake.

About 18 to 22 inter-denominational church seniors attended this gathering. The group has grown to 60 members over the past five years. It is open to people 60 years and older from any church.

Gatherings are every second Wednesday at the N.G. Church (locations may vary) from 10:00 to 12:00. The need for socialising and making new friends speaks for itself.

An annual programme includes outings and activities happening throughout the year. The Dra Mekaar Senior Group is a non-profitable group of elderly who can barely make ends meet with the little bit they have.

They depend on public funding to help with their outings and activities. Dra Mekaar also participates in different outreaches to the elderly at different old age homes.

Any help from the community by means of donating craft items such as wool, ribbon, beads, zips, buttons, material and all sorts of creative items will be gladly appreciated.

All 60-year-olds and over who want to be a part of Dra Mekaar can contact Eileen Bezuidenhout on 082 467 5307.
With the year coming to an end, Dra Mekaar will resume on January 18.
