Leandra robbers remain in custody

The second suspect was arrested as he tried to use a six-year-old girl as a human shield .

Four of the five suspects arrested for an armed robbery in Leandra last week, appeared in the Leandra Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, October 18.

These men are between 27 and 40 old and hail from Gauteng, Limpopo and Mpumalanga. The fifth suspect could not yet appear in court because he was admitted to the hospital after being shot during arrest.

These suspects were arrested for a business robbery on Saturday, October 15 afternoon. They allegedly held up the 51-year-old shop owner, his wife, employees and customers.

One robber who was in possession of suspected stolen property, allegedly pointed a gun at the police as he was heading to the door. He was then shot.

The gun with its serial number filed off was retrieved from his possession. The second suspect was arrested as he tried to use a six-year-old girl as a human shield.

The police were searching for more suspects until late evening. The extra three suspects were tracked and arrested where they were hiding inside the ceiling.

Firearms with serial numbers filed off were also found in their possession. In total, three firearms were confiscated from the suspects with ten live ammunition seized.

The suspects will re-appear before the Leandra magistrate court on Tuesday, October 25.
