‘Don’t hitchhike,’ warn Evander Police

The victim was shocked when the car was driven back to Evander and he ended-up in Springs where he was robbed at gunpoint of his cellphone and cash.

EVANDER – Police in Evander warn the public to refrain from hitchhiking after a pedestrian was dropped off almost 100km from where he had planned to go.

According to Sergeant Zukiswa Mxhotjelwa, Evander Police spokesperson, the victim had been hitchhiking from Evander to Secunda when a car stopped.

The occupants told the victim that they were going to Secunda and offered him a lift.

The victim was shocked when the car was driven back to Evander and he ended-up in Springs where he was robbed at gunpoint of his cellphone and cash.

Mxhotjelwa said they opened kidnapping and robbery cases.

Mxhotjelwa also warned motorists not to stop for hitchhikers because some of them ended-up being hijacked.
