Police arrest woman with baby’s corpse in cooler bag at Evander Hospital

The child’s father thought his girlfriend was in hospital to deliver his baby.

eMBALENHLE – A woman (30) from eMbalenhle was arrested on October 5, after the body of a dead child was discovered in a cooler bag the woman was carrying while visiting Evander Hospital.

According to Constable Busi Mthethwa, eMbalenhle Police spokesperson, a nurse alerted the police.

The woman allegedly gave birth to a boy in May and when she realised that he was not breathing, she allegedly wrapped the child in a plastic bag and placed the body in a fridge.

According to Mthethwa, the woman allegedly took the body from the fridge, placed it in the cooler bag and went to Evander hospital on October 3.

“It is alleged that when the woman arrived at the hospital, she didn’t approach any health worker or nurse. She sat in the waiting room with the dead baby in her cooler bag until Wednesday afternoon, October 5.”

Mthethwa said when the child’s father arrived at the hospital, he demanded to see the file opened for his child, but to no avail.

He was apparently convinced that his girlfriend had given birth at the hospital.

“That is when the nurses found out about the dead baby in the cooler bag.

“Medical personnel certified that the child was dead. The baby had been dead for four months. ”

Mthethwa said the woman was arrested and charged with murder.

She appeared in the dock of the Evander Magistrate’s Court on Monday, October 10 and was released on warning.

She will be back in court on Thursday, November 17.
