Water saving measures needs to be adopted in Standerton

Water demand always outstrips supply as some consumers do not adhere to water saving practices.

Rand Water urged consumers to use water sparingly as high temperatures are putting a severe strain on its distribution network.

The continued high consumption may lead to serious water shortages in its areas of supply. Rand Water supplies water to parts of Gauteng, Mpumalanga, North-West and the Free State.

According to a statement dated September 30, water demand always exceeds supply as some consumers do not adhere to water-saving practices.

Consumers are requested to adopt water savings measures.

Some water-saving measures include:
• Avoid washing cars with hosepipes, but use buckets;

• Avoid watering gardens during the day, but do so between sunset and sunrise;

• Avoid washing pavements with hosepipes, but use brooms to sweep;

• Turn off taps while brushing teeth;

• Do not hesitate to repair the leaking taps;

• Avoid turning on taps fully and turn them off after use;

• Avoid leaving taps running while rinsing hair or shaving;

• Use sprinkler system, if necessary, between sunset and sunrise.

• Cover swimming pools to prevent quick water evaporation;

• Install low-flow restrictions on taps at home;

• Use cold water to wash hands, not hot water;

• Re-use bath water for watering the flower beds and lawns; and

• Use water-efficient dishwashers.

A hairdressing salon in town expressed their despair on Thursday, October 6 at running a small business successfully.

“It has become a near impossible task in the current climate,” Marinta Verster and Linda van der Merwe agreed.

“Because of the electricity and water interruptions, valuable working hours are lost. Yet our municipal fees stay the same.”
