Victims of gender-based violence in Standerton area get support

“My vision is that every victim of gender-based violence gets support,” Cheune said.

The Victim Empowerment Centre in Mispel Street, Standerton is a non-profit organisation that offers free services to victims of gender-based violence.

Lekwa and the Gert Sibande District are covered. According to Seshika Chuene, temporary, emergency services are available 24/7.

“We rely on sponsorships,” Chuene said.

She applies for funding online and the centre receives donations such as food and clothes from companies in town.

Cheune grew up under guardianship and admitted she was traumatised from an early age.

“I am not a victim, but believe there is a need for a mentor for support and positive advice,” she added.

“My vision is that every victim of gender-based violence gets support. They need love most of all.”

Altogether 664 cases were reported in September. She grew up in Observatory, Johannesburg and completed her matric at Zoetfontein High School before applying herself to studying. The organisation was begun in 2006 and registered with the national directorate in 2009.

Cheune completed courses in a wide field of studies such as criminal justice, marketing management and communication, mediation, business management skills and auxiliary social work.

“I understand the strategies to make an NPO work,” she concluded.
