Florentia Moloi from Secunda wants to work with young people

Social worker wants to work with young people.

SECUNDA – Florentia Moloi (30) joined Tutela’s team earlier this year and is looking forward to a new season in Secunda. She grew up in Denotter and studied sports management through Unisa after she matriculated.

She completed her Honours degree in social work through Unisa as well, before working as a medical receptionist at a doctor’s surgical room.

Moloi was hoping for some time off when the Covid-19 pandemic hit the world, but God had other plans in store for her.

She began working as an intern for social work at Wits University’s health consortium in June 2019, shortly after she graduated.

Later Moloi was one of the front line workers during the hard lockdown of Level 5 when she worked at shelters for homeless people.

“It was a great experience for me, although getting up every morning was a risk as I had to travel to my workplace daily using public transport,” said Moloi.

“We worked with the Department of Health and Social Development. I had to trace people who contracted Covid-19 and we also provided services these homeless people needed such as counselling.”

She is grateful to still be healthy today and said she did not catch the Covid-19 virus once.

When her one-year contract finished, she rested for two months before joining an Alpha Trauma Centre located at a school in Heidelberg where she worked as a volunteer for nearly two years.

Moloi was ready for a change of scenery when she applied for a job at Tutela in Secunda and as she majored in criminology, she was hoping to work with young offenders.

Although she does not work at a prison now, she does a lot of statutory work, which she said is difficult, however, she gets the opportunity to work with young people.

In her free time, Moloi enjoys playing netball or visiting family. She uses netball as a way to manage her stress levels. She also completed her courses to become an umpire at netball games and has umpired for the junior games.
