Govan Mbeki Municipality’s speaker condemns assassination attempt on ward councillor

“I fail to understand if the attack of our councillor was politically motivated or personal.”

The Govan Mbeki council speaker, Fikile Magagamela, condemns the attempted assassination of the Ward 4 ANC councillor, Simphiwe Sindelo (39) in eMbalenhle.

Sindelo survived a hail of bullets on Tuesday evening, September 27. According to police, Sindelo arrived home from a school meeting, parked his vehicle, and went into his house.

More than 10 gunshots were fired at the driver’s seat of the car and on the councillor’s house, aimed at the kitchen door.

The police confirmed that more than 20 shots were fired from a gang of more than five suspects. The councillor and his family were not injured.

The police’s LCRC visited the scene. A case of attempted murder was opened. No arrests have yet been made.

“I fail to understand if the attack of our councillor was politically motivated or personal. Councillors are now living in fear after the incident. We appeal to the community to assist police with information that will lead to the arrest of the suspects.

“If this was done by disgruntled community members, may they please sit down with a councillor and find an amicable solution. Do not take someone’s life,” Magagamela pleaded.

“As councillors, we have to work with the community,” she said.

Magagamela said the councillors agreed in the recent council meeting held in the council chamber on Thursday, September 29, that Sindelo and his family need to be protected.

She said the municipality will provide Sindelo and his family with security personnel at his home. Magagamela also appreciated how eMbalenhle Police responded to the incident.
