Murder suspect makes first court appearance in Amersfoort

The suspect tried to flee, but the police caught up with him. He faces charges of murder and assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The Provincial Commissioner of Police, Lieut-Gen Semakaleng Manamela, sent a strong message about gender-based violence in a statement dated June 20.

According to the statement, Charlie Shabangu (29), who was sought in connection with the death of his girlfriend, Nomalanga Zwane (34) on June 6, was arrested on June 18.

The accused allegedly assaulted the victim’s brother before fleeing with his cellphone and that of the deceased.

The community notified police about a man hitchhiking from Mkhondo (Piet Retief) towards Wakkerstroom and gave a clear description of the car he was travelling in. Volksrust Police assisted Wakkerstroom Police and intercepted the vehicle.

The case was postponed to July 20 for legal representation. The suspect remains in custody. Lieut-Gen Manamela said police will tackle the scourge of domestic violence.
