Chili-Fiesta sets Rayton on fire

This festival turns on the heat.

The annual Chili Fiesta was presented for the second time this year at Legends MX in Rayton.

Sanctuary Farm Produce and Moerbeibos Farming were the minds behind the event.

There were four challenges posed to the participants.

The “1 Chip Challenge” was won by Theresa Engelbrecht, the “Traffic Light Samoosa Challenge” where Meurice Amod was crowned the winner, the “Hot Wing Challenge” where Willem le Roux walked away as the winner and the “Fresh Pod Eating Challenge ” where Ian Lottering made sure he made headlines.

There were also two competitions, namely the “Best Tasting Sauce” competition where Tony’s Sauces won first place, Hotty Peno was second and Jissie Sussie took third place.

The “Hottest Sauce” competition ‘Jou Sussie van Brits’ took first place, Jissie Sussie took second place and Hotty Peno finished third. The Capsicum Team of Go n Grow did the judging for the two sauce competitions.

The challenges have existed in America for many years, but they have also flared up in SA recently.

There are 10 entries per competition.

The chillies for the “Fresh Pod Eating Challenge” were sponsored by Moerbeibos Farming.

With each chilli that is eaten, there is a time attached and then there is a fire interval that follows before the next chilli is eaten.

There were eight wings for each participant.

The participants had three minutes to eat a wing and then there was a one-minute fire break.

Each wing had more heat than the previous one and a tincture shot was added.

The winner was determined by the participant who could eat five wings with one tincture shot.

The wingspan was about 2.7 million on the Scoville scale each.

“It’s damn hot. If I can compare it: Jalapeno is 7,200 on the Scoville scale, Carolina reaper is 2.3 million Scoville’s on the scale. It is not meant for the general person on the street, ”said the organizer, Hannelie van Staden.

There is also great praise for the medical team that provided voluntary assistance.

“They were incredibly good and fundraising for them would be welcome,” van Staden concluded.
