Latest N4-speedster clocks in at 240km/h near Bronkhorstspruit

“The latest arrested speedster is the highest recorded incident in the province in the past two years,” said Sello Maremane, spokesperson for the Gauteng Traffic Department.

The Gauteng Traffic Police High Speed unit arrested a 39-year-old motorist after he clocked double the allowed speed of 120km/h at 240 km/h on the N4 highway towards Bronkhorstspruit.

The speedster, driving a red BMW, was caught at around 21:15 on Thursday, March 10.

He was immediately detained at the Bronkhorstspruit Police.

The driver appeared at the Bronkhorstspruit Magistrate’s Court on Friday, March 11 where he faced charges relating to reckless and negligent driving with an alternative charge of exceeding the prescribed maximum speed limit of 120km/h on a highway.

This arrest follows not even two months after the 47-year-old driver of a white Porsche was apprehended on the N4 on January 25, excessively speeding at 204 km/h. (Streeknuus, February 4).

Meanwhile, four people lost their lives on Thursday, March 10 near the Donkerhoek off-ramp on the N4 highway towards Mpumalanga.

Preliminary information indicates that the driver of a heavy motor vehicle lost control over the vehicle and it bumped a taxi which was towing a trailer.

The four people who died were passengers in the taxi.

A fifth person was stabilised and transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

“We are concerned that excessive speeding in Gauteng has become a daily occurrence.

“The latest arrested speedster is the highest recorded incident in the province in the past two years,” said Sello Maremane, spokesperson for the Gauteng Traffic Department.

“The road fatalities in the province in recent times is attributable to among others, not wearing seatbelts, the violation of traffic signals, distracted driving, using public road while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, excessive speeding, unsafe overtaking and jay-walking,” Maremane concluded.
