Facebook has been abuzz with posts and comments from locals saying that they felt an earthquake after midnight on Sunday evening into Monday morning, March 14.
According to earthquake.usgs.gov, the earthquake reading was 4.8 magnitude 20km west of eMbalenhle while other apps say it was a 4.1 magnitude quake.
The location is said to be 26.500°S 28.864°E with a 20.7 km depth.
The earthquake could be felt as far as Kriel.
While most people were asleep at that time of the morning, a local Trichardt resident said she was awake when the tremor happened and while sitting in her bed she heard a noise before the tremor.
“I could see and hear my bedside lamp moving and hitting the wall. I even heard birds chirping at that time of the morning. I assumed it was the tremor that startled them,” said the resident.
