Post Office in Secunda gives back to elderly

Employees initiate project to give soup and bread.

Employees at Secunda Post Office decided to reach out to local pensioners and initiated a project where they give them a treat every month when they collect their pension.

Spokesman of the Post Office SA, Johan Kruger, said pensioners in Secunda now have more than cash to look forward to every month.

The post office employees financed this project from their own pockets and prepare sandwiches or soup with bread at home the evening for pension collect their money.

Pensioners can also enjoy a cup of coffee or tea at the post office.

The manager of the Secunda Post Office branch, Nelly Hlatswayo said all the employees contribute to this cause and it has now become a tradition at the post office to treat their elders.

“This initiative began when we saw how cold the pensioners were in the winter when they come to collect their pension, especially here on the Highveld with our bitterly cold mornings,” said Hlatswayo.

“We ensure that everybody exercises social distancing at the post office by spacing the pensioners out on chairs, then they can also be comfortable.

“We must look after our customers, we have a job because they are here.”

Separate queues are formed for pension pay-out days to ensure that no customers wait too long at the post office to be helped.
