Community must not panic, says GMM mayor

The municipality had a problem with its vending systems but it has been corrected and a new credible company has been appointed for the task.

Govan Mbeki Municipality’s executive mayor, Mr Nhlakanipho Zuma, told the media on Friday, December 3, that the municipality is not in a coalition government.

He said the council has been established, although there are mutual agreements that might have been formulated out of the processes of democracy.

Mr Zuma said the municipal council will be functional despite speculating that the municipality will be dissolved.

“We must confirm that we are not going to be dissolved. We are going to run the business as usual.

“There are certain areas that required commitment to our community, all of us know that we have serious challenges with regard to service delivery because of financial viability which we are currently working on.”

Mr Zuma said the municipality had a problem with its vending systems but it has been corrected and a new credible company has been appointed for the task.

“The municipality is on the verge of finalising transfers of all data from the previous service provider,” said Mr Zuma.

He said the municipality is now able to sell electricity from their own premises or offices in all areas.

According to Mr Zuma, this is a sign that they are moving in the right direction.

He also said the municipality will appoint contractors that will be working on electricity meter replacement of faulty metres. including those that are connected to the grid.

Mr Zuma said the municipality is still under section 139 subsection (5) of the Municipal Finance Management Act, which is financial recovery.

“We are still working with treasury, Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) and other relevant institutions to ensure that we fix the financial stability of the municipality.

“We are going to continue to intensify service delivery in a coordinated manner, we request the support of our community in ensuring that we do what we are supposed to do.”

The mayor said they are still faced with problems where municipal electrical items are stolen or vandalised.

“The municipality is working with the police and private security companies to fight this,” said Mr Zuma.

The press briefing was called by the municipal troika, which is the mayor, speaker and council chief whip.
