School in eMbalenhle hosts mother and daughter awareness

“We make the parents be aware that everything they do at their homes, whether is good or bad, has an affect on their children.”

Vukuzithathe Primary School in eMbalenhle held a mother and and daughter awareness campaign on Saturday, November 13.

According to the school principal and the founder, Ms Matseliso Mnembe, they began the programme after realising that their learners got involved in drugs and some become pregnant or drop out of school before they can even reach secondary school.

She said the programme was launched two years ago because they realised that formal education alone is not enough and they needed to also play parental role.

“We make the parents be aware that everything they do at their homes, whether is good or bad, has an affect on their children.

“As we spend more time with their children, we are able to notice any bad or good behaviour which sometimes emanates from what happening in their homes.

“We have produced good learners through this campaign because we monitor them, even from their secondary schools,” said Ms Mnembe.

She said many young girls are victims of gender-based violence.

Ms Mnembe said it is their responsibly to identify children with that problem and to refer them to the relevant departments for help.

She also said they are building communication between parent and child as they also teach them about the Bible or spiritual growth.

Thuthuzela and eMbalenhle Police also gave information on how to report cases of rape and GBV, and explained all processes that are conducted once such cases are opened.
