Lekwa residents are waiting to hear the outcome of court verdict

“Our legal team are cautiously optimistic, as the case went very well, with most of Eskom’s poor arguments being put in question,” the post read.

Lekwa Municipality introduced internal load-shedding for a day on Thursday, November 25.

According to their communications department, the power tripped on the Eskom-side due to an overload.

The notified maximum demand (NMD) of 55 was exceeded.

Lekwa said they had no choice but to begin with week 1 of municipal load-shedding.

Compounding the problem was a faulty transformer, supplied by Eskom, and the rain that fell.

Lekwa Ratepayers Association posted on their Facebook-page that the verdict of the Supreme Court-case of November 23 is awaited.

The litigation against Eskom is to lift the NMD cap to at least 67MVA.

“Our legal team are cautiously optimistic, as the case went very well, with most of Eskom’s poor arguments being put in question,” the post read.

The background is that Eskom agreed to lift the NMD in September already if Lekwa pays their current account.

Lekwa has tried doing so with aggressive revenue runs and debt collection, but still falls well short.

According to the association, the NMD will not be lifted unless Lekwa pays the current account or the court rules in favour of the ratepayers.

The Standerton Advertiser contacted Mr Gary van Aswegen, chairman of the Vaal Business Forum, on Friday, November 26.

“The verdict usually takes a couple of weeks, but we are very positive,” Mr Van Aswegen said.
