Duo appear in Secunda Magistrate’s Court on charges of theft and stolen property

Chemicals weighing 26 900kg valued at about R100 000 were found inside the truck and trailer.

A Sasol Security guard, Mr Sfiso Butheledi (34), and a truck driver, Mr Mpostoli John Sindane (46), appeared in the Secunda Magistrate’s Court on Monday, November 15, on charges of theft and possession of stolen property.

Capt Dineo Lucy Sekgotodi of the Hawks said in a media statement at the two men were arrested in the early hours of Sunday, November 14, at a gate to Sasol.

The truck and the trailer was stopped and searched by the security guards at the exit gate.

Chemicals weighing 26 900kg valued at about R100 000 were found inside the truck and trailer.

Members of the Hawks Serious Organised Crime Investigation in Secunda were summoned to the scene.

The team questioned Mr Sindane and asked him to produce the documents for the loaded chemicals, but he could not.

Mr Sindane was immediately arrested and the truck with the chemical was confiscated for further investigation. His cellphone was also seized.

A sample of the chemical was taken for analysis and identification.

During preliminary investigation, it was established that the driver was communicating with one of the security guards on his cellphone.

The security guard, Mr Butheledi, was also arrested for conspiracy.

The duo was remanded in custody and the case has been postponed to November 19 for bail application.

The case is still under investigation.
