MEC Vusi Shongwe warns residents about crime this festive season

The culprit stated in his email that his cousin needed help in the form of money transfer and the culprit was apparently having issues with his bank account.

MPUMALANGA – Mr Vusi Shongwe, MEC for Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison (DCSSL) of Mpumalanga, warned residents to be alert as the festive season is around the corner.

Mr Moeti Mmusi, spokesman for Mpumalanga DCSSL, said with so little time to go before the festive season, criminals and scammers will likely accelerate their efforts to swindle many out of their hard earned money.

“Therefore, residents should be more vigilant, especially on social media and avoid being gullible as opportunists will waste no time to pounce,” he said.

Mr Shongwe said, “Our communities should not so nonchalantly supply their banking details to strangers.

“Banks run awareness campaigns on an ongoing basis, people just need to be more cautious.

“Scammers send millions of emails daily with the hope of conning more people with their nefarious tricks,” Mr Shongwe said.

He concluded residents should always verify the authenticity of any electronic communication that they receive.
