Spring Day held in Azalea, Standerton

The two friends rolled up their sleeves and began cleaning the area in Taljaard Street on Wednesday, September 15 for everything to be shipshape the following Saturday.

Messrs Gino Rooinek and Elwin Dames established an NGO, Azalea Youth Movement, towards the end of March.

The 23-year-old and 22-year-old are taking the bull by the horns to curb drug usage in Azalea.

According to them, it is a problem of huge proportions, coupled with unemployment and the outbreak of the pandemic.

They intend to focus on the youth and aim to have a park, in the open field in Taljaard Street, with appropriate recreational apparatus.

A recreation centre forms part of their vision.

“We want to demonstrate to the youth that there is a better life than being a drug addict,” Gino said.

“Somebody has to do something,” Elwin said.

A Spring Day was held on September 18 and everybody was welcome.

A jumping castle provided entertainment to the young ones and party packs were given out.

A game or two of soccer was also planned by the former defender and left wing from United FC.

Food did not fall by the wayside either.

Both men completed Grade 12 at Azalea Combined School, are unemployed, yet want to set an example of a brighter future.
