Gert Sibande District sent information on August 19 on water levels at dams in Mpumalanga.

According to their statement, levels continue to decline, but are stable.

The Department of Water and Sanitation weekly state of reservoirs report of August 16 shows that Grootdraai Dam slightly dropped from 81,6% to 81,1%, Vygeboom from 95,8% to 94,9%, Jericho from 73,1% to 72.3%, Westoe from 62,5 % to 60.1% and Heyshope from 84,8% to 84,5%.

The Nooitgedacht and Morgenstond dams remained unchanged at 94,8% and 84,1% respectively.

The report also shows that on average, the dam levels in the province dropped from 82,0% to 81,5% which is still more than 10% higher than the same period last year when the average level stood at 69,9%.

In the catchment areas, the Olifants Water Management Area dropped from 74,9% to 74,4% and the Inkomati-Usuthu water management area dropped from 88,7% to 88,2%.

The department however, encouraged the public to continue using water wisely and sparingly, taking into account that South Africa is a water-scarce country and every drop counts for water security for current and future generations.
