Toddlers die after house fire near Standerton

A candle was burning as the area does not have electricity.

The Provincial Commissioner of Police, Lieut-Gen Semakaleng Manamela, urged parents and guardians not to leave their children unattended.

This follows an incident in which two toddlers, both aged 2, died in a house fire in Amersfoort on August 16.

According to a media statement of August 17, the twins, a boy and a girl and their girl cousin, also aged 2, were reportedly left in the care of a guardian.

The children were left alone when the guardian went to buy something at a shop.

A candle was burning as the area does not have electricity.

Moments later neighbours saw flames and called for help.

The guardian is said to have arrived, informing them that the children were inside the house.

They managed to rescue the boy, while the two girls could not be saved.

Medical personnel certified them dead on the scene.

The boy was rushed to hospital where he is currently receiving medical attention.

Amersfoort Police have opened an inquest and the matter is being investigated.
