Injured Ambika thanks people for their support

She was first admitted to casualty at the hospital in town with head fractures, as well as a fracture to her left index finger.

Ms Ambika Sunder of Florapark, a professional nursing lecturer at the Standerton Hospital, is on the way to recovery after the accident on 31 March at the four-way stop to Secunda.

A group of hospital personnel was on the way to the Evander Hospital for Covid-19 vaccinations, when their minibus collided with an oncoming truck.

Ms Sunder was sitting directly behind the driver and both of them sustained serious injuries.

“I lost consciousness,” she said.

She was first admitted to casualty at the hospital in town with head fractures, right scapula fracture, as well as a fracture to her left index finger.

Sister Sunder was then transferred to Mediclinic Highveld before being airlifted to the Alberton Trauma Hospital.

A total of 10 days was spent in hospital there.

The Standerton Advertiser had the opportunity to speak to Ms Sunder on Thursday, June 17.

She is booked off until July 5, but will go to work on June 23 for a check-up.

An operation to her finger will be done the next day and if it is not necessary, she will return to work on July 5.

This mother of Vishay and Nikita and wife to Raj, said the support during this time has been tremendous.

She mentioned family, friends, hospital staff, students, ex-students and hospital management, who all gave their unwavering support and reassurance.

“Somebody even stood guard over my possessions at the accident scene and took care of it,” Ms Sunder added.

“It makes me feel so good and is part of my recovery.

“Thank you to each and everyone.”

The owners of the truck involved at the accident offered apologies as well.

With 30 years of nursing behind her, Ms Sunder’s support system played a role in nursing her back on her feet.
