Protesters barricade roads in Standerton

The Secunda Road was next on the list at 9:05 and again motorists were prevented from using the road.

Motorists driving under the Meyerville Bridge on Friday, 11 June were met with a barricaded route.

The first message to indicate that something was amiss was at 5:03.

The ongoing power interruptions in Standerton had protesters resorting to burning of tyres and rubble.

Standerton Police, the traffic department, All Star Towing Services, the fire department and AfriForum were all alerted to make the route accessible for drivers.

Schools in Standerton realised the predicament for both teachers and learners to and from town.

The Secunda Road was next on the list at 9:05 and again motorists were prevented from using the road.

Burning tyres and smoke going upwards were signs of the deep-seated resentment against the plight of no electricity and water.

Both roads were open for traffic later on.

In a day filled with a protest at the municipal offices, the R23/Johannesburg Road was closed off as well.

Stones were put in the road and tyres were burnt.

Many a local first made enquiries as to the safety on the roads before attempting their journeys.

A threat was made in Mbonani Mayisela Street later the day, that frustrated residents would not hesitate to block off all routes to town.
