Bail denied for Carolina man accused of stabbing girlfriend with broken beer bottle

Ms Mabuza ran to the bathroom to hide, but the accused broke the bathroom door and entered with a knife and allegedly stabbed her.

Carolina Magistrate’s Court denied bail to Mr Glen Matimba Baloyi (29), who was arrested in connection with domestic violence and attempted murder.

He was arrested on 13 May after his girlfriend, Ms Pretty Nonhlanhla Mabuza, managed to escape and seek help.

According Ms Mabuza (26), Mr Baloyi was allegedly drinking while she was doing laundry.

She told the police that he asked to speak to her, but she told him they would talk after she was done with the laundry.

Sgt Thabang Mokwana, spokesman for Carolina Police, said: “The boyfriend got angry and aggressive, he broke a beer bottle and stabbed her.”

Ms Mabuza ran to the bathroom to hide, but the accused broke the bathroom door and entered with a knife and allegedly stabbed her.

She sustained multiple injuries on her head, hands, back and shoulder.

Ms Mabuza managed to run outside the house to call for help.

Sgt Mokwana added the police arrested Mr Baloyi who, according to them, was attempting to run away with the knife still in his hands.

Ms Mabuza was admitted to Carolina Hospital.

Mr Baloyi first appeared in the Carolina Magistrate Court on 14 May, and again on 17 and 28 May for formal bail hearing.

According to Sgt Mokwana, one of the reasons he was not granted bail is the seriousness of gender based violence cases.

He allegedly threatened to kill the victim and himself.

The case was postponed to 14 July for further investigation.

“The police thank community members who report criminal activities and urge victims of GBV to report these cases,” Sgt Mokwana concluded.
