Man who shoots and robs GS4 guard in Bethal, goes to jail

The Bethal Regional Court sentenced Mfundo Muzi Mpondombi (31) on 17 March to 15 years’ direct imprisonment for armed robbery with aggravating circumstances and another eight years for attempted murder.

BETHAL – The robber who shot and robbed a GS4 guard in Bethal in 2018 was sentenced to jail last week.

The Bethal Regional Court sentenced Mfundo Muzi Mpondombi (31) on 17 March to 15 years’ direct imprisonment for armed robbery with aggravating circumstances and another eight years for attempted murder.

These sentences will run concurrently.

Mpondombi and his accomplice, Sandile Thabani Thabethe ( 29), ambushed G4S security guards in front of the OK Grocer on 12 October 2018.

The guards were collecting cash from at the complex in Vuyisile Mini Street at the time and as they were returning to their vehicle, Mpondombi and Thabethe robbed them.

Mpondombi shot a guard in the neck.

The robbers grabbed the money but dropped it as they were fleeing the scene.

The police’s Secunda Serious Organised Crime Investigation (Hawks) and Secunda Crime Intelligence received information on the suspects whereabouts and Thabethe was arrested four days later.

Mpondombi was arrested in eMzinoni on 23 November.

Thabethe pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 10 years’ direct imprisonment on the 6 October last year.
