Some kids in the Secunda Education Circuit are still not in school

Some of the children were in school last year, but are now told that they are too old for school.

eMBALENHLE – Desperate parents from eMbalenhle alleged that the Department of Education’s circuit offices in Secunda failed them.

Some said that they had registered their children last year to get them into school this year, but they never received any response. Others claim their children were chased away from their schools because of their age.

The parents complained that the Secunda circuit manager, Mr Sello Molepo, allegedly told them to leave him alone because his own children are not affected.

This irked the parents because Mr Molepo is managing the schools which had sent the parents to Mr Molepo in the first place.

“We went to schools to find out why our children were not accepted for learning as we have applied late last year, but the schools directed us to the circuit office which was not helpful.

“He said we can go wherever we want to get education for our children,” said Mr William Vilakazi, a parent.

Some parents were allegedly told their children are too old to be in school.

“We want to know what we must do with our children, and why we are being told this now and not last year.

“Some of the children were in school last year, but are now told that they are too old for school. What are we going to do with these children because they will end up doing drugs,” said Ms Noxolo Phetani who travelled from Kinross with her two boys.

The Mpumalanga Department of Education said the circuit manager, Mr Molepo, denied what the parents were saying about him.

“Secunda is one of the fastest-growing towns and leaners’ admission is a challenge, but we are attending to the matter. We request cooperation from the parents.”

Mr Jasper Zwane, spokesman for the Mpumalanga Department of Education said all children should be at school this month.

“We request parents to go back to circuit manager and we assure them that they will be assisted,” said Mr Zwane.
