Charl Cilliers-residents demand to see GMM mayor and speaker during council meeting

“The only service that we have, is electricity because it is being supplied by Eskom.”

SECUNDA – Charl Cilliers residents demanded to see the Govan Mbeki Municipality executive mayor and speaker during the council meeting on Thursday, 3 March.

Community members claim the municipality is not taking them seriously and that there are no services in their area.

The residents said they have a non-functioning multipurpose centre in Charl Cilliers, their roads are not maintained, their councillor is arrogant, and if employment opportunities come to their area it is given to people from eMbalenhle.

“The only service that we have is electricity because it is being supplied by Eskom, not the municipality. If it was not so, we would suffer. We are being left outside by Govan Mbeki Municipality,” said Mr Mthokozisi Siyaya, community leader.

Residents said they will fight for what belongs to them because not all the projects that come to their area benefit them.

“We have a problem with our councillor. She is always involved in who must get projects and she takes decisions about who must be subcontracted.

“We reported this to Mr Nhlakanipho Zuma during his time as the speaker. Now he is a mayor, but we are still facing the same problem.”

Mr Siyaya said that is why they went to the council meeting.

The residents said they are tired of false promises and they wanted to see both the executive mayor and the speaker.

However, the Charl Cilliers community members went home without even see either the mayor

Officials in the mayoral office told them they needed to make an appointment to see the mayor and speaker.

Both were in a council meeting.

Residents from Charl Cilliers gather outside Govan Mbeki Municipality. They demanded to see the mayor and speaker on Thursday, 4 March.
