Bethal SPCA stands out in blue

Inspector Laurna Coetzer and her team are extremely grateful for the new facelift. In addition they would like to see the remainder of the perimeter walls being painted and made more visible from the N17.

BETHAL – The entrance to the local SPCA received a spectacular makeover, and this is all thanks to local resident and artist Ms Veronica van der Westhuizen of VDraws.

Using her time, artistic skills and paint Ms Van der Westhuizen said she felt the SPCA needed more additional blue to match up the already blue shipping container and blue roof.
“We stay up the road and drive past here and I could see the walls was in need of a good paint.

“The SPCA is a cause that has always been close to my family and I, so I wanted to do something good and something that can stand out for all to see,” said Ms Van der Westhuizen.

The front of the wall took her two weeks to complete. The rainy weather delayed the project.

The SPCA, which is a non-profitable organisation, relies on much needed funds and donations made by the community.

According to Ms Coetzer, Bethal SPCA is the second smallest in the country and their services are extended all the way to Kriel, Ermelo, Morgenzon and Standerton.

The Kriel and Standerton SPCA were the most recent to close down.

“We are desperate for diesel for our vehicles to get to these town where our services are needed,” said Ms Coetzer.

“It is a problem for us to get out to emergencies because we just do not have enough diesel.”

Besides diesel being a shortage, the SPCA also do outreach programs, educating pet owners against animal cruelty and correct ways to take care of their animals.

“You won’t believe the animal cruelty cases we see daily, and it is the simple things like being on a short chain, no shelter or shade, no food or water.”

She said the Bethal SPCA’s running costs is up to R40 000 a month and with surrounding areas seeing closure expenses are increasing and the kennels are continuously full.

“If all Bethal residents can make a recurring monthly contribution of only R50 it would help a great deal,” ended Ms Coetzer.

If you would like to make a monthly contribution towards the SPCA banking details are: SPCA Bethal, Standard Bank, 031033253, Branch 052544.
