Govan Mbeki Municipality fails Kinross residents

Community fix potholes and put lights up.

KINROSS – Residents are sick and tired of the state of their town.

The main street in Kinross was flooded earlier in January because of a blocked drain and it forced motorists to drive on the wrong side of the road.

Residents in Thistle Grove had no water since 15 January because of Govan Mbeki Municipality’s failure to settle its debt with Rand Water.

A resident said water throttling has been a problem in Kinross for the past five years.

“Kinross is one of the unfortunate towns to reap the results of the municipality’s bad decisions,” said a resident.

“When throttling happens, we seem to be the last town to receive water.”

Other issues that residents are unhappy about are the grass that is not being cut, illegal dumping and potholes.

The community fixed many of the potholes in the streets of Kinross as. according to a resident, the municipality only fixed potholes once during the course of year.

“The grass at the reservoir is so long and there are holes in the gate again so it is just a matter of time until thieves again steal cables at the reservoir and damage the reservoir,” said a resident.

There are also no lights in the streets of Kinross.

The community installed lights in their yards that shines onto the streets just so there could be some light when one drives at night.

“When we asked the municipality to fix the lights, they said they did not have any materials to fix it,” said a resident.

The Ridge Times asked the communications department of Govan Mbeki Municipality for comment and their response will be published in the next issue.
