As part of bringing services closer to the people, the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison (DCSSL) in collaboration with the South African Post Office, launched a service for motorists to renew vehicle licenses at the post offices.
The project will be rolled out at post offices provincially.
The service is now available in Ermelo, Ganala (Kriel), Siyabuswa, Nelspruit, Bosbokrand, Mhluzi, Hendrina, White River, Sonpark, Thulamahashe, Mapulaneng, Mashishing, Malelane, Leraatfontein (Witbank), Standerton, Balfour, Elukwatini, Tonga and Volksrust.
The service will soon be extended to more post offices in the province as well.
Cash as well as debit and credit cards are accepted as payment for the renewal of motor vehicle licenses.
Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Ms Gabisile Shabalala has welcomed the development saying it will increase access to licensing services to motorists in the province.
“We are delighted to offer this service in conjunction with the post offices in our province.
“This project shows how co-operation between government agencies can bring services closer to the people.”
According to her, it will ease the workload on the licensing centers so that employees there will be able to render other services to the community quicker.
Meanwhile post office Regional Manager, Mr Thomas Mokoatlo, said post offices offer an extra venue for renewing motor vehicle licenses.
Mr Mokoatlo added that post offices are also open on Saturdays from 8am to 12.30pm which makes it more convenient for people who work during the week.
Vehicle owners are only required to present an identity document as well as proof of residence when renewing their motor vehicle license.
The post offices also offer a bulk renewal service for fleet owners, who can drop off their renewal documents and collect their disks later.
“The renewal of motor vehicle licenses is one of the frequent transactions at post office branches – clear evidence of the success of this service.
“During the past financial year more than three million motorists renewed their car licenses at a post office branch,” Mr Mokoatlo concluded.
