Ermelo police arrest several for not complying to lockdown regulations in Ermelo

Several people were arrested on charges of driving under the influence of liquor, drinking in public and for driving without their licenses.

Ermelo police, together with Piet Retief police and members from the local neighbourhood watch, conducted a high-density operation over the weekend of 23 October in Ermelo.

According to Capt Prinsloo, the purpose of the operation was to be visible and to prevent crime.

“Specific attention was given to offenses in terms of the Liquor Act, Dangerous Weapons Act and Road Traffic Act.”

Msukaligwa Municipality closed the gates of Pet Dam, as residents were not complying with the regulations of the Covid-19 lockdown.

Mr Mandla Zwane, spokesman of Msukaligwa Municipality said: “The closure was done in fear of the second wave of Covid-19.”

Locals have in the meanwhile made the Sport-Inn’s parking lot the new party hotspot.

Mr Zwane said: “Any gathering or non-compliance to the regulations can only be enforced by the law enforcement agencies.”

Capt Prinsloo said: “Four fines were issued to owners of liquor outlets for not complying with the conditions for their licenses.”

According to Capt Prinsloo, operations were held at Ermelo Sport Inn, nearby Pet Dam and the rest of Ermelo.

Several people were arrested on charges of driving under the influence of liquor, drinking in public and driving without their licenses.

Capt Prinsloo concluded operations such as these will be the order of the day as we move into the festive season.
