SACP protests outside Ouma Rooi Koeksisters in Ermelo – doors temporarily closed

She explained that one of her staff members had three written warnings against her and had to attend a disciplinary warning.

Ouma Rooi Koeksisters was forced to temporarily close its doors after the South African Communist Party (SACP) members protested outside the store in Ermelo on 16 September.

Ms Gerda Swanepoel, owner of Ouma Rooi Koeksisters, said: “The protest was not aimed at the the complex as a whole, but instead only my store.”

She explained that one of her staff members had three written warnings against her and had to attend a disciplinary warning.

Staff members were scared and had to close the doors of the bakery for their own safety.

Around 9.45am the protesters dispersed and the doors of Ouma Rooi Koeksisters could be opened again.

“I have 48 staff members and we work really well together.

“Some of them have been working for me for 13 years now and never has there been a protest over labour disputes before.”

She would like to thank ACSU Security, Ermelo Police and members of the public that were at the bakery to protect their interests.

Ouma Rooi Koeksisters has in the meantime opened its doors to customers again.

The Highvelder sent media enquiries to Mr Mzwandile Zulu, the SACP sub-district convener, however the Highvelder still awaits response.
