Gert Sibande District Municipality embarks on oversight drive

This is part of the Local Government Week.

SECUNDA – Mr Muzi Chirwa, mayor for the Gert Sibande District Municipality, has called on the Govan Mbeki Municipality to expedite service delivery.

He was in the area for a project oversight drive as part of the Local Government Week.

Mr Chirwa told the political and administrative leadership of the Govan Mbeki Municipality they need to be committed in providing excellent performance.

He said this will result in a capable and financially sound municipality.

According to Mr Chirwa, one should expect that there will be consequences if you do not perform.

“We are here to find ways to fast track service delivery and to ensure that we give adequate support to this municipality.

“It is important that municipalities are able to meet basic service delivery by ensuring that planned projects are executed. You are expected to report accurately and honestly so that we will know where to assist.

“Do not report lies,” Mr Chirwa told the leadership.

Mr Chirwa said his visit also formed part of the District Development Model (DDM) which is aimed at engaging municipalities on the status of projects in line with the Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG), the status of their Annual Financial Statement and to update their public participation.

Mr Chirwa and his delegation were joined by Mr David Mahlobo, deputy minister of Water and Sanitation, who embarked on an oversight visit to water and sanitation projects in the area.

The Charl Cilliers Treatment Works, the water bulk line for Charl Cilliers and the Extension 25 pump station were some of the projects visited.

Mr Mahlobo engaged with the project managers at the different sites to understand the plans and challenges with which they are faced.
