Deputy minister visits Standerton to investigate water issues

Standerskop Reservoir and Rooikoppen Sewer Treatment Plant were visited to find solutions to water and sewer challenges within the municipality.

The Deputy Minister of the Department of Water and Sanitation, Mr David Mhlobo, was in town on Wednesday, 9 September to investigate the water issues in Lekwa.

According to information, the spokesman of the minister was contacted to expedite intervention.

The Standerton Advertiser contacted the communications manager of the municipality, Ms Thobeka Mtshiselwa, on Thursday, 10 September for more information and was referred to their Facebook-page.

The page of the Lekwa Municipality gave feedback and indicated that the Standerskop Reservoir and Rooikoppen Sewer Treatment Plant were visited to find solutions to water and sewer challenges within the municipality.

Mr Linda Dhlamini, mayor, Ms Angel Khanyile, DA-Member of Parliament, Ms Gugulethu Mhlongo-Ntshangase, municipal manager, Mr Mpho Mogale of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), district and local councillors, as well as officials from the department, district municipality and Lekwa joined the minister on the site visits.

Ways were discussed in which the problems can be resolved. Mr Dhlamini made a commitment that they will dispatch water tankers while a permanent solution is sought.

The municipality also said that intervention from national, provincial and district level are in place to address water and sanitation challenges in Lekwa.

Information was received on 11 September that a big water leak in Nkosi Street in Sakhile was being repaired.

The communities of Wards 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 11 and 15 were to be affected and work was estimated to be completed by 5pm.

The newspaper also left a message for Ms Khanyile in connection with the site visits on Saturday, 12 September and is awaiting comment.
