Here is your go-to-guide detailing all there is to know about adopting a pet.

How does a SPCA adoption work? Adoption fees are as follows: Male Dog R850 Female Dog R1100 Male Cat R650 Female Cat R850 Here is your go-to-guide detailing all there is to know about adopting a pet. What you pay for when adopting a pet from the SPCA? Each successful adoption from an SPCA includes spaying or neutering, vaccinations, a physical exam, microchip and a lifetime of unconditional love (priceless). When you apply to adopt a pet from the SPCA, you will pay an R250 non-refundable deposit, which is included in the total adoption fee. What you need to know about adopting from the SPCA? To adopt a pet from the SPCA, you must be over the age of 18, your property must be fully enclosed, you must be able to afford the services of a private vet and you must have your own transport to take your pet to the vet. So how does it work? First view the animals currently up for adoption by visiting the Highveld Ridge SPCA’s adoption web page or follow the organisation on Facebook and Instagram where pets looking for homes are regularly posted. Alternatively, visit the adoption kennels to meet adoptable pets in person. Visiting hours are from 8am to 14pm Monday to Friday. Operating hours on Saturdays and Sundays are from 8am to 12am Remember an adoption application needs to be completed. This helps the SPCA to perfectly match a family with a pet. You will need to take along your ID book as well as proof of address. If you reside in complex/flat we will also need a letter from the Body Corporate that states that you are allowed to have pets. If you are renting we will also require a letter from the Landlord that states that you are allowed pets on the premises. After your application is complete and you payed the deposit the SPCA will conduct a home inspection. But why does the SPCA need to conduct a home check? This is to make sure that if you have opted to adopt a large dog that you have high enough walls, while if you have chosen to adopt a small dog that it will not be able to escape through your fence. What happens next? Once your adoption is approved, a meet-and-greet may be arranged. This means your family and current pet may come meet the family’s new addition. If it all works out and your adopted pet is ready for its forever home, you will be notified and you can collect your new addition after final payment is done and your animal is back from the vet. We make use of local vets and will book the animals according to the vet’s availability to accommodate us. We try our best in homing the animals to best-suited homes. We do not approve/decline applications due to an applicant’s race, age, or area/town they reside in. The animals wellbeing is our only main concern. We also believe in conducting post-adoption checks to make sure animals adopted from us are well taken care of at all times. If for any reason an animal adopted from us can not be taken care of anymore or any other reason the animal MUST be surrendered back to the SPCA and not given away as per the signed adoption contract.
