Ms Trudie Grove-Morgan, DA- spokesman for CoGTa, issued a press release today about the Lekwa Municipality’s water debt.
According to the statement, Mpumulanga municipalities owe water boards nearly R2-billion.
Lekwa stands at R538-million. Audits are required as per the Municipal Finance Management Act.
The DA requested provincial governmental intervention in and assistance to municipalities.
Water losses in the Lekwa municipal area stand at 83% of water purchased.
Ms Grove-Morgan referred to old and dilapidated infrastructure, leaking pipes and taps as well as water theft.
Payment terms furthermore are 30 days.
The DA said strict financial management is needed, taking into account the Eskom-debt.
