Major issues at Masizakhe Secondary School still not addressed

Grade 10s and 11s have not been allowed to return for the time being and on 23 July, members of the community demanded that Grade 12s also stay at home until the school could comply to the necessary regulations.

Teachers from Masizakhe Secondary School in Breyten, armed with posters displaying their discontent with the Department of Education, protested outside the regional offices of the department in Ermelo on 6 July.

Since then, not much has changed and an array of issues still pester, not only disgruntled teachers, but also pupils, parents and the school’s governing body.

A concerned teacher said there is only one general worker who has been tasked with ensuring all classrooms are effectively sanitised and disinfected, this is still the case.

Additionally, toilets are broken and there is no clean water at the school.

According to the teacher, the Department of Basic Education promised to fix the toilets in order for Grade 11s to be phased in again.

“They sent an official to assess the toilets and the official promised to escalate the matter to higher authority,” the teacher said.

The school’s governing body, with limited funds, decided to hire mobile toilets for a week in the hope that department would have remedied the sanitation situation.
