SANBS implements safety measures

The blood service has implemented measures to ensure the continued safety of blood donors at their donor sites.

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) issued a statement on Thursday, 16 July about the current donor situation, saying that more than 3 300 donations are needed daily.

According to Ms Dot Prinsloo, donor relations practitioner, the blood service has implemented measures to ensure the continued safety of blood donors at their donor sites.

The measures are:

• Screening of all persons at donation clinic entrances.
• Donors exhibiting flu-like symptoms or symptoms of infections are advised to delay donation until they are well.
• SANBS staff are screened daily and staff with flu-like symptoms or symptoms of infection do not work in clinics until they are well.
• Provision of alcohol hand-rub solutions at each clinic entrance.
• Surfaces and equipment are disinfected before the clinic begins, following each donation event and at the end of the clinic.
• All staff wear appropriate personal protective equipment while on duty.

Ms Prinsloo said that donors will be required to wear a mask when visiting one of their donation sites.
