Young woman dies from poison while at work in Secunda

eMBALENHLE – The Cindi family is seeking answers following the saddened death of their daughter, Mathapelo (20), a learner operator, who recently died at Sasol on 14 June.

Ms Cindi left home healthy and happy however the family was shocked when they received a phone call that they should come to Sasol because she has fallen sick.

Mr Simon Mashele, father, said the family is devastated and traumatised.

He said this was not expected and that they planning her 21st birthday celebration in August.

“There is no way we can express the excruciating pain we are going through.

“We do not know how we are going to make her three-year-old son understand this situation.”

Mr Mashele said the post-mortem allegedly revealed that Ms Cindi was poisoned.

She did not pack in food for her night shift as she and her colleagues often collectively made supper.

Mr Mashele said the family is shocked as to why anyone would do such a thing to their humble daughter.

He said Ms Cindi was quiet and shy. She was a loving person who spent all her time with the family.

The family is depending on police to investigate the matter.

According to the police, Ms Cindi fell violently ill at work that night and died just after 8pm.

Paramedics declared her dead on the scene.

A medical examination revealed that Ms Cindi possibly consumed poison.

Food that was laced with a substance that appears to be a type of poison was found among her personal belongings.

The police have sent this away to be tested. They are currently still treating the incident as an inquest investigation.

Sasol confirmed that Ms Cindi, a learner operator at Sasol Nitro Fertilisers, fell ill and died while at work.

“Emergency medical services were immediately dispatched to the scene,” said Alex Anderson, Head of Group Media Relations.

“Sasol is providing the necessary support to the family and colleagues of the deceased during this difficult period.”

Sasol said it remains committed to the safety and health of its employees, community and environment.
