Transformer catches fire in Bethal

BETHAL – A transformer exploded and caught alight in Tsibitsi Sibanyoni Street near Laerskool HM Swart at about 11pm last night, 8 June.

According to residents, an electrical team worked on the transformer earlier in the day. This was confirmed by Ms Mariaan Chamberlain, DA councilor.

According to Ms Chamberlain, the extent of the damage is not yet know. “It all depends on how bad the damage is. Cables might have burnt right into the ground,” said Msr Chamberlain.

She said if something could be saved, a temporary transformer could be connected. However, she has doubts about this due to the extent of the fire.

She said a meeting was scheduled for 10am this morning, 9 June, to discuss the matter.
