Govan Mbeki Municipality fixes sewage leak after fish dies

Municipality only comments on day sewage leak gets fixed

SECUNDA – Govan Mbeki Municipality finally managed on Tuesday, 7 January to fix a massive sewage leak in Danie Theron Street in Secunda.

Residents have been complaining about this sewage leak since the beginning of December and believe dead fish in the dam near the Kruik Church was caused by sewage leaking into the nearby streams and dams around Secunda.

Ms Mariaan Chamberlain, DA councillor, kept residents updated about the municipality’s progress and said the municipal team battled to open the pipe where the problem was.

Ms Chamberlain even organised that Smet Jet helped the municipality.

Smet Jet could, however also not open the pipe.

Municipal staff tried again on Tuesday with a bigger truck and succeeded to open it on Tuesday.

The communications department of Govan Mbeki Municipality responded on Tuesday, 7 January (after the Ridge Times deadline) with comment on this issue.

Mr Benzi Soko, acting head of communications, said the municipality’s technical team has been on site attending to the sewer problem and he confirmed that the team managed to fix the sewer.

The municipality did not respond to the Ridge Times‘ others questions about the contractor who was ready to repair the problem before 7 January, but was stopped by the municipality’s financial department.
