VIDEO: People still complain about Evander Dam

People partying and littering in the open space and park area known as Evander Dam, in Pietersburg Street, are still a problem for residents living in this street.

“Every weekend they occupy this whole area and we cannot even let our children play outside,” said a resident.

“They leave all their bottles here and litter can be seen everywhere when they are gone.”

Sometimes the residents living in this street take plastic bags and clean up the area after the party-goers have left.

The Ridge Times asked the communications department at Govan Mbeki Municipality for comment and if the municipality cannot join hands with the police to solve this problem.

Mr Lucky Mhlongo, spokesman of the municipality stated the by-laws again and said the municipality noted that the parks are being highly used over the festive season.

Some people replied to a post on Facebook regarding this problem:

Thobeka KaThombela UMasdudu: It’s actually very annoying because we can’t take our kids out to play by the dam.

PW Van Zyl: I am so fed up with people coming to Evander over weekends and leave the place looking like a pigsty! At the Old Mutual building and the dam! Sies man!

Stefan Cornelis Jacobus Diedericks: Not really the municipality. The rubbish is left there by the people. People need to start cleaning up after themself. Is all well to have a good time but when you leave don’t dump your trash next to your car door. This is a respect problem. The municipality is not the ones causing the mess. People without respect that doesn’t care are the problem

Michelle Nandkoomar: I live across the dam, I can’t let my child play outside, because of the men who urinate infront of our house.

Dadarosky Dk: I fail to understand why people can’t use bins provided. What’s so difficult? If no one cleans the place r we going to come back to the sane place next weekend? Looking like that? Then why not use the bins? Like seriously????

Rita Marais: If they can just put up fencing and ask a small amount per person entering then this will not happen

Dries Kruger: The fencing will be stolen within 24hours.

Mtholvin Tervin Gumede: Yes that’s so true and security’s should be there to look after the dam plus it’s gona be job creation

Ernst Kleynhans: It is a pity that one must look after groups off adults to behave themselves in the public places.
