Homeless people in Secunda CBD again becomes a problem

Govan Mbeki Municipality must act on problem in CBD in Secunda

SECUNDA – Women working in the CBD feel unsafe when going to work, because of homeless people sleeping in front of shops.

“They do not only sleep here, but they also urinate here and do their other business,” said one of the women.

“It smells like a toilet here and sometimes they sleep right in front of the door. We cannot even get into our workplaces or open the doors.”

The Ridge Times did a story about the same problem last year and the municipal by-laws enforcers then removed the homeless people, but now it looks like they are back. Some workers in the CBD suspect this is a new group.

Capt Betinah Zondo, spokesman of Secunda Police, said the municipality should take action.

The Ridge Times asked the communications department of Govan Mbeki Municipality for comment on Monday, 9 December and it will be published in the next edition.
