Land invaders threaten to install their own water pipes

The Azania community threatens to connect water on their own. They claim the Govan Mbeki Municipality is ignoring their plight

eMBALENHLE – The Extension 22 land invaders are demanding water supply from the Govan Mbeki Municipality.

The Azania community began invading the land in 2016 led by the then Economic Freedom Fighters leader, Mr John Mahlangu.

They now threaten to install their own water pipes and communal taps if the municipality does not attend to them.

They claim to have tried following the correct channels, but have not received any help from the municipality.

Mr Mahlangu said the community wrote several letters to the Ward councillor, the MMC for Water and Sanitation, and to Ms Thandi Ngxonono, the executive mayor, requesting that the land invaders be supplied with water.

In a letter written to the Ward councillor in August, the residents requested that a water tanker be dispatched to supply water in the area. However, they allege that the Ward councillor did not respond to them.

They wrote another letter to the councillor requesting the provision of water and the grading of roads, and the MMC apparently did not entertain it either.

They tried to report the two councillors to the mayor and also requested help, but Ms Ngxonono allegedly did not respond.

Mr Mahlangu said they have now decided to do this by themselves and are seeking donations from companies and organisations.

“We tried getting water through correct channels with no success.

“We are now doing this on our own.

“As the community we have managed to buy 21 meters pipe and six taps.

“We are currently in need of 400m of 20mm pipe and two taps.

“We hope to get assistance from locals, because the municipality have failed us.”
