Eskom warns GMM that it will suspend power supply in 15 days

Govan Mbeki Municipality has 14 days to cough up the almost R50-million in arrears money or Eskom will flip the switch.

HIGHVELD – Eskom issued a notice to the Govan Mbeki Municipality today, 1 November, that the electricity supply will be terminated because of the council’s failure to pay even the arrears on its account.
Mr Chris Lekhuleni, Eskom ’s middle manager customer relations, addressed the notice to Mr Felani Mndebele, GMM municipal manager, warning him that the municipality is in breach of the supply agreement entered into between the GMM and Eskom.
He wrote in the notice that all the municipality’s accounts have not been settled in full. The total amount outstanding on the arrears account is R49.6-million.
Mr Lekhuleni also referred to the payment agreement where it states that if payment is not made within 15 days from the billing date, Eskom may discontinue the supply without notice of termination.

GMM has been contacted for response. Mr Benzi Soko, chief of communications, said the MM is studying the notice before commenting.
