Secunda Police ask public to stay clear of crime scenes

An employee of the law firm was robbed of her cell phone in their front office at about 10am that morning.

SECUNDA – Do not give in to your curiosity and crowd the scene of a crime.

“We often have situations where the public flock to a crime scene, instead of staying away from the potentially dangerous situation,” said Capt Bettina Zondo, spokesman for the Secunda Police.

“Criminals are often dangerous and armed. What will happen if you are caught up in the crossfire between robbers and the police?”

An incident in the Secunda CBD on Wednesday, 9 October was no exception as pedestrians, shoppers and nosy retail employees crowded in the area around Protea Medi-Wise Pharmacy, the law firm of Cronje, De Waal and Skhosana Inc, and the Govan Mbeki municipal offices.

An employee of the law firm was robbed of her cell phone in their front office at about 10am that morning.

She told the newspaper that she proceeded to the front desk to help two men who had entered seconds before. Her colleague was occupied with other clients.

“As I walked up to them to ask if I can help them, I noticed the rifle in one’s hands. He demanded my phone,” she said.

She said the gunman has a scar on his right cheek. He was wearing a beanie and a white T-shirt at the time.

The second man was dressed completely in black, except for white sneakers. The duo snatched the phone and ran away.

Some witnesses claim to have heard gunshots near the entrance to Absa Bank in the old OK Mall opposite the law firm’s entrance, but this could not be confirmed.
